| Swine Priory near
Kingston upon Hull had five granges which provided food to the nuns and
monks. One of the granges was called several variations of our surname
including Fayrholm, Feyrholme, Farom, Fairholm and Fareholme. According to the records for the adjoining Meaux Abbey for 1210 - 1220, Fayrholme was formerly called Scithelholme. An Anglo-Saxon dictionary we have found says that scitel-finger meant fore-finger. In relation to this land, scitiel may be being used to refer to an area of higher land pointing into marshland.
