Fairholm field, Lowdham parish, Nottinghamshire, England

In the parish of Lowdham there was a field called Fairholm, but we have not yet found out where it was. We have also found a reference to a ffearholme bridge in 1690. Fearholme is one of the alternative spellings of the name. The bridge was on the road from Nottingham to Newark, somewhere near Gunthorpe which is also in the parish of Lowdham. It is not clear exactly where the bridge was or which river or stream it crossed.

The earliest known hereditary use of the family names occurs in the parish of Lowdham and with the large number of family members living in Nottinghamshire from the 1700s it is tempting to assume that the English version of the name started here. Interestlingly, Gunthorpe is a combination of a Scandinavian personal name and the Scandinavian word normally identifying a secondary settlement or hamlet.

Any relationship between the family, the field and the bridge is unclear at the moment.
